Moira
Demense, circa over 40 acres of parkland with picnic sites,
children's play area and pleasant walks, Moira Demense contains
a varied selection of award-winning rosebuds.
Moira, is a Georgian masterpiece, situated between Lisburn and Lurgan,
Moira means 'big rath'. The town has many beautiful buildings which
line its main street. These are mainly Black-stone houses built in
the 18th century. Many of the houses still have carriage archways. |

The
market house was built in 1810 and is supposed to have marked
the completion of the village. Such other notary elements
of this beautiful town include an assortment of antique and
gift shops.
A wooded park open to the public was part of the former
grounds of Moira demesne, which used to be the home of
the Earls of Moira. Some
of the castle foundations can still be seen in the park. Across the
road from the park entrance you can see St John's parish church which
sits on the top of a hill at the end of a long, grassy avenue. William
Butler Yeats, grandfather to the poet WB Yeats, was a curate here
in 1835. |
