Birdies Special Olympics

Both of the above clubs provide sports training, Ripples since 1997 and Birdies since 2001, for those with learning disabilities.

Ripples Club has 46 members from the age of 6 to 37 years, mostly training in swimming, but also in Table Tennis, Soccer and Tenpin bowling.
s
Birdies Club, newly formed in 2001, provides training in Golf Skills and hopes to extend training so that Special Olympics athletes can progress onto the golf course with their own handicap for a full round of golf. The club presently has 12 members.

Together they have trained eleven athletes going to the National Games in Dublin 2002, where they competed against Special Olympics athletes from the other three provinces, Munster, Connaught and Leinster.

There will also be 400 athletes coming from Europe as these games will be Pre Games for the Special Olympics World Games 2003, when 7000 athletes from all over the world will be participating.
